Position Description
Provides advanced veterinary technical skills with respect to the care, management, treatment, and documentation of care provided to animals used in the teaching and research program of the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine (TTU SVM). This job would involve instruction of veterinary students in clinical and professional skills laboratories involving multiple species including physical examination, surgical, medical, handling, and communication situations. Incumbent must be willing and able to follow-up on all animal health issues on a daily basis. This will at times require weekend and holiday care of sick animals. Adherence to robust safety practices and compliance with all applicable health and safety regulations are responsibilities of all employees.

About the Department and/or College
The Small Animal Veterinary Technician provides advanced veterinary technical expertise in support of the teaching mission of the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine. This position plays a vital role in the pre-clinical veterinary curriculum by delivering high-level patient care, instructional support, and laboratory coordination within the Clinical and Professional Skills (CPS) program and elective courses.

The incumbent collaborates closely with DVM faculty to deliver hands-on training in many aspects, including but not limited to anesthesia, physical examination, diagnostics, behavior and handling, and professional skills laboratories involving multiple species. As the School does not operate a traditional teaching hospital, the technician's responsibilities are primarily within the pre-clinical instructional environment.

This position requires daily follow-up on animal health concerns and may require weekend and holiday care for sick animals. Major/Essential Functions
  • Provide training, teaching, and assessment support in CPS and elective labs; act as lab lead in the absence of faculty instructors in assigned teaching labs.
  • Provide medical care in collaboration with DVM faculty for teaching animals (dogs and cats); ensure upkeep of proper medical records; communicate through proper reporting chain; support Small Animal Husbandry Caretakers in Raider.
  • Animal Care program, enrichment, and behavior assessments.
  • Support CPS Technicians in set up, ensuring compliant operations, and cleanup of CPS lab areas.
  • Support CPS Technicians in maintenance and care of models.
  • Ensure appropriate levels of inventory are available and prepped for CPS and elective labs.
  • Support Anatomic Pathology Technicians in teaching specimen preparation, delivery, and cleanup.
  • Collaborate with the Inventory Manager to maintain equipment in assigned areas; upkeep of maintenance logs for assigned equipment.
  • All procedures will be followed in accordance with the CPS Faculty and Staff Handbook.
  • Proficiency in electronic medical record systems and accurate technical documentation.


Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Five years of experience working with animals in a veterinary hospital. Fostering the Core Values of the School of Veterinary Medicine.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technology program.
  • Credentialed (LVT, CVT, or RVT) veterinary technician.
  • Experience in anesthesia and surgical support.
  • Experience in a teaching or academic veterinary environment.
  • Experience with advanced diagnostic imaging modalities.
  • Experience using electronic medical record systems.


Pay Range
$17.69 - $22.98 - $28.32
