Position Summary:
The University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) is seeking a new Attending Veterinarian & Animal Resources Center Director. The UAF Attending Veterinarian (AV) is responsible for the health and well-being of all animals used at this institution. To fulfill this mission, the AV oversees the UAF Animal Resources Center (ARC) and has direct or delegated authority to ensure the adequacy of animal care and use at UAF. The AV reports directly to the Vice Chancellor for Research and is a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The AV works closely with the IACUC and the VCR to manage our institution-wide animal care and use program. Director responsibilities include the management of all staff, programs and policies for the UAF Animal Resources Center which includes direct authority for the operation of our two main animal facilities and the University's veterinary services core. This position will be physically located at the UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Duties:
1-40Clinical Diagnostic Work: The UAF Attending Veterinarian (AV) is responsible for the health and well-being of all animal subjects used in research or teaching activities at UAF. This role includes the husbandry and animal housing, preventive care and treatment of disease. Consideration for adequate veterinary care of animals at UAF includes but is not limited to: 1) Animal procurement and transportation 2) Acclimatation program for animals 3) Preventive medicine and disease surveillance 4) Animal well-being and clinical care 5) Review of all preoperative, surgical, and postoperative procedures 6)Anesthesia, analgesia, and euthanasiaEssential 2-35IACUC (Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee), Advising Researchers: As the AV, participate as a voting member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and report directly to the delegated Institutional Official who, at UAF, is the Vice Chancellor of Research (VCR). Ensure that proper oversight of animal care meets applicable standards for health and welfare. Manage the application of appropriate treatment or control measures including euthanasia if indicated following diagnosis of disease or injury. Consult with researchers on animal methodologies, surgery, and peri-surgical care. Deliver competent professional judgment to select the most appropriate agents to alleviate pain or distress in order to ensure humane treatment of animals while avoiding undue interference with experimental goals.Essential 3-25Administration: Act as the Director of the Animal Resource Center (ARC). The ARC is the operational component of the University's centralized animal research program and resides within the VCR's office. The ARC includes the Biological and Research Diagnostics Building Animal Facilities (BiRD), The Large Animal Research Station (LARS), The Biological Reserve Animal Facility, and UAF Veterinary Services. Supervise and lead an Associate Veterinarian, Veterinary Technician, Laboratory Technician and Safety Officer, Animal Care Technicians, an Education and Outreach Coordinator, student hires (3-6), and seasonal hires (1-5). Responsible for a thorough understanding and implementation of personnel policy, grievance procedures, and evaluation of employees. Responsible for the development, maintenance, and availability of training opportunities for employees. Responsible for budget planning, development, and monitoring of departmental budget. Represent ARC as the authorized university representative with signature authority. Approve hiring efforts and use of funding.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Ability to care for animals and knowledge of animal research best practices.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to lead a variety of employees.
- Knowledge and ability to meet applicable standards for animal health and welfare.
- Ability to diagnose disease or injury and implement the appropriate action, including euthanasia.
- Knowledge and ability to prescribe medication to animals, as needed.
- Board certification in laboratory animal medicine or another veterinary specialty is preferred but not required.
- High level leadership, managerial, and supervisory skills.
- Ability to develop a thorough understanding of the mission, goals, and operations of the ARC.
- Sound judgment and effective mediation, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure, meet deadlines, and handle stress successfully.
- Ability to represent and advance the interests of the ARC.
- Ability to identify, organize, plan, and allocate resources.
Required Education or Training:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and/or equivalent, eligibility for licensure in Alaska, five years experience as a DVM or equivalent.
Board certification in laboratory animal medicine or another veterinary specialty is preferred but not required.
Salary Information:
This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. The salary for the position is dependent on experience and negotiable.
