DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:
Under the direction of the Dean of Biological and Health Sciences, the primary role of the fulltime Veterinary Technology Instructor is to teach veterinary technology students on various subjects in lecture and laboratory settings. These veterinary technicians in training must learn both didactic and skills-based information, with an emphasis on critical thinking and clinical application of knowledge. Responsibilities will include formal lectures, demonstration, laboratory instruction, and teaching and evaluating skills as required by the AVMA. The program philosophy is one of collaboration among faculty to teach critical thinking skills in students using multiple modalities in teaching. The program has an animal colony, a clinical laboratory, surgical suite, radiology suite with digital x-ray, dental x-ray, and ultrasound. The ideal candidate will be able to transfer veterinary clinical experience to the classroom and help students understand the underlying reasons for their training. The successful applicant will be called upon to use their knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm for veterinary medicine in teaching a wide range of subjects: small animal medicine, anesthesia and surgery, clinical pathology, radiology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, laboratory animal medicine, and large animal medicine among other required subjects. The ideal full-time instructor will be experienced in performing small animal surgery and interested in helping to develop the next generation of veterinary nurses.

Standard duties expected of all faculty include development and evaluation of curricula, maintaining scheduled office hours, attending department and division meetings, pursuing professional growth activities, and performing other duties consistent with the role of an instructor. Instructors also can serve on district and college committees and participate in campus extra-curricular activities. In Veterinary Technology there are additional program needs in terms of caring for program animals, participating in program specific committees (Advisory Board, IACUC), maintaining inventory for laboratory classes and animal care, and evaluating our students for their clinical skills as required by our accrediting body. We are looking for a dynamic educator who is sensitive to students' different learning styles and educational needs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Understanding of, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff.
  2. Graduate of an A.V.M.A accredited veterinary technology program AND a valid California State license as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).
  3. Any bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of professional experience, OR any associate degree AND six (6) years of professional experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. DVM preferred.
